Today, my post is dedicated to two powerful women. First the beautiful poet Maya Angelou. Second…wait, wait, wait…we will get to that later. Maya Angelou is and always be, my favorite poet. She has a variety of poems that I find just absolutely amazing. Her poems have always left me feeling confident, as if I am a woman who can take on the world. May she rest in peace and be remembered for the lives she touched and the hearts she helped mend. She has truly helped me get through some rough times; with her inspirational words of courage and hope. She is truly a woman whose work will be missed.
Here is one of my favorite poems by the great Maya Angelou. It exemplifies one particular person in my life. Someone I truly love and admire. She does everything with grace and poise; without an attitude or a frown. She is beautiful beyond measures. This poem is dedicated to my big sis Kena. No one knows behind closed doors, how much we do for the ones we adore.
Woman Work
I’ve got the children to tend
The clothes to mend
The floor to mop
The food to shop
Then the chicken to fry
The baby to dry
I got company to feed
The garden to weed
I’ve got shirts to press
The tots to dress
The can to be cut
I gotta clean up this hut
Then see about the sick
And the cotton to pick.
Shine on me, sunshine
Rain on me, rain
Fall softly, dewdrops
And cool my brow again.
Storm, blow me from here
With your fiercest wind
Let me float across the sky
‘Til I can rest again.
Fall gently, snowflakes
Cover me with white
Cold icy kisses and
Let me rest tonight.
Sun, rain, curving sky
Mountain, oceans, leaf and stone
Star shine, moon glow
You’re all that I can call my own.
Maya Angelou
